Highlights
In early 2020, as the world was yet to fully comprehend the catastrophic impact of COVID-19, a young girl in Wuhan, China, where the pandemic began, started sharing her diaries online.
For two agonizing months, she chronicled the heartbreaking loss of both of her parents to the disease. Then she too fell sick, and eventually, her posting stopped.
Four years on, her fate remains unknown. Her diaries have disappeared from Chinese online platforms, and discussing her story is prohibited.
In the US alone, COVID-19 has claimed over a million lives. But narratives that personalize these losses are rare, often reducing the immense personal tragedies to mere statistics.
Yet, this girl from China is more than just an overlooked statistic; she and many like her have been actively silenced, their truths relegated to the realm of whispers and rumors, their existence unacknowledged, their loss un-mourned, and their stories untold by those in power.
Driven by a desire to ensure her life is not erased, I translated the girl’s diaries into English. While translation can never fully capture the raw emotions of the original language, I believe our shared capacity for empathy transcends the limitations of language and culture.
I am thrilled to announce that I have been accepted into the 2022B class of Google's Computer Science Research Mentorship Program (CSRMP). I intend to further my research in NLP, HCI, and behavioral economics, with the goal of leveraging technology for social good. #ai #machinelearning #aiforgood #research #mentorship
