I am typically a private person that does not post much content EVER (especially personal). I do however feel the need to share a personal story about a phone call I had five years ago on this day. In addition, about the change that came out of it.
In the summer of 2017, I received the horrific news that my best friend Mas Yukawa, a cardiac anesthesiologist for the University of Alberta Hospital, had taken his own life.
I was devastated and unable to process any of it.
However, after going through this tragedy, I have come to understand something essential about grief. After you move through the various stages—after the shock, the anger, the depression, the regrets of what I could have done and finally the acceptance - you get to something else: change.
Mas was extremely successful and spent much of his free time volunteering to help those in need. So much so that he made it a point to leave funds to create a foundation that will continue to help others and live on.
In a sense, he forced those closest to him to transform our grief into change by coming together as a board for the Mas Yukawa Foundation. Our goal is simple: to help change the way our society supports aspiring high-achievers going through mental health challenges.
We believe that mental health in our work environments is an area that is long overdue for an overhaul. In addition, we would like your help in getting the word out about this important cause. Please visit the Dr. Mas Yukawa Foundation LinkedIn page, and follow if you can. The more of us who can join this journey, the more change we can make.

Grief into action. Failure into wisdom. Regret into greatness. That's the kind of change I want to see in the world.
And I am absolutely sure it's something Mas would want too.
Thank you for the time,
Claude
