Highlights
I’m thrilled to share the first collaboration between MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson, the world’s top YouTube creator) and Stand Together. The video by Beast Philanthropy features one of the most amazing schools I’ve ever seen Ron Clark Academy. Visiting there, I was brought to tears seeing how engaged, confident, and EMPOWERED the students were. Each class comes to life through Socratic method and collaborative problem solving. I saw firsthand a student go from timid and unsure of himself to becoming the hero of his math class, showered with encouragement and support, in a span of 20 minutes. This is what “believing in people” looks like. What’s more, the school has trained over 100,000 teachers across the country to transform their classrooms too. As part of this project, we helped make it possible for 800 teachers from all 50 states to attend the training. It’s needed, urgently. Research shows that 66% of students are disengaged by the end of high school. That’s what happens when you make kids sit in rows all day and do rote memorization, taking the same tests in the same way at the same time. Schools like Ron Clark Academy show what’s possible when you fire kids up by helping them discover their unique gifts and passions and purpose in the world. A huge thanks to Darren Margolias, Dan Mace, and their team for their beautiful work.
I’m thrilled to share the first video from our partnership with Mike Rowe (of Dirty Jobs fame). He’s telling the inspiring stories of social entrepreneurs tackling big societal problems and their innovative solutions we are helping to scale across the country at Stand Together. People like Chad Houser and his award-winning restaurant Café Momentum that’s run by youth fresh out of juvenile detention. Without this program, 85% of these young men and women will commit more crimes and go back to jail. None of us benefit from this poverty to crime to prison cycle. But with Café Momentum, not only do very few re-offend, they transform their lives. Because Chad and the team at Café Momentum believes in each kid, and they teach them to believe in themselves – helping them discover their passions, develop their gifts, and get on a path to realizing their potential. (You’ve probably experienced the magic of someone believing in you from people in your life. I know I did. Now imagine if you never had any of that growing up. That was the case for so many of these kids before Café Momentum. Between that and other barriers in their lives, they never really had a fair shot at making it...until now.) What’s really cool: Café Momentum is working hard to open new restaurants across the country. With 40,000 people dining at each restaurant a year, and people like Mike Rowe exposing them to millions more, this is the sort of thing that can change paradigms – not just about juvenile justice, but about the transformative power of believing in people. Awesome work Jade Estrada and the Mike Rowe team!
