This was another fantastic HBS European summit, after Paris in 2022. I really enjoyed listening to all the panels and meeting so many warm and engaging alumni.

The panel on the future of Medicine with Giovanni Monti Lorenzo Wittum and Luciano Ravera was particularly interesting to me. Here are few nuggets:

  • Continuous and very promising innovation in cancer care
  • Leveraging AI to help with diagnoses and admin to save time for practitioners
  • Importance of prevention to catch diseases before it’s too late
  • But low investment in prevention at this point, low incentive for insurance re-prevention and need for more data. The public sector needs to get involved.
  • Great initiative in the UK with Our Future Health UK which will constitute a massive database of health Data

Thanks to the amazing organisation team, including Raffaele Petrone Juliana Zinger Emanuela Cernoia Cinzia Rascazzo everything was top notch and looking forward to the next Summit, while staying in touch with everyone.

Yasi Baiani inspired me with her top leadership reads from 2023. So here goes my list. This list is focused on health rather than leadership, at the same time being physically and emotionally healthy makes you a better leader. I enjoyed listening to these books; they’re all very enlightening and empowering, and they all make sense together (a bit more far-fetched for the tennis one!)

  • Brain Energy by Christopher Palmer: a deep dive into mitochondria and our metabolism, linking mental diseases (Alzheimer’s, depression…) to mitochondrial deficiencies. An Emphasis on gene expression triggered by lifestyle and environment (vs genes only), which I find super empowering.
  • Outlive by Peter Attia: how we can avoid the 4 horsemen (heart diseases, diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases) and live healthier for longer, focusing on physical (sleep, exercise, nutrition) and emotional health. This one is a good practical guide to brain Energy.
  • Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker: this book came out a few years ago and addresses in details the sleep part of the lifestyle interventions recommended in the 2 previous books. Many edifying pieces of research on the impact of sleep (or lack thereof) on brain functions, the immune system, fertility, productivity and mental health.
  • Energy Rising by Dr. Julia DiGangi: this book leverages neuroscience to help us transform any painful emotion into a more powerful and helpful one. Again super empowering, with practical advice to break emotionally draining patterns at work or in all personal relationships, and address the emotional health required in books 1 and 2.
  • Sport & Tennis bonus 🎾 The Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Galway: for all the club tennis players who struggle to play their best tennis when competing. Simple, though powerful advice. I now understand why it helps so much to look at the ball.

I hope you'll find these helpful, maybe for New Year's resolutions! Please share your top reads and Happy New Year 🎆
