SIGCHI Friends.
I'd like to encourage you to vote in the SIGCHI Election. I'd also like to share that my vote and support will be for Aaron Quigley and Margaret Burnett.
I am very grateful to Neha Kumar and Luigi De Russis for the work they have done, along with Andrew Kun and Shaowen Bardzell in the executive roles before Luigi. I have a few reasons why I want to vote this way:
-
I've worked with Aaron for years on SIGCHI events. His focus on policy, finances, process, and science is what the SIG needs as it moves into a challenging period where we will have to adapt to a changing world. I have never met anyone (and I know a lot of people) as effective as Aaron in accomplishing goals.
-
Several ECs in a row now have followed a "one term" strategy. I think this is a positive for the community. The way these terms work, maintaining one term administrations reduces the outsized effect any one person (or even a few) can have on the community.
-
The past two committees have been very successful in broadening our base - with the recognition that we have much more to do on that front. My sense is the next stage of that work is about process and transparency, and I know from working with Margaret and Aaron that those are top line priorities for them.
-
We have some challenges coming to SIGCHI. The Open Access model, rising costs, changing publication guidelines and more. Aaron and Margaret's experience across a broad swath of SIGCHI conferences in my mind is the best suited characteristic to meet these challenges.
I've had a chance to play many, many roles in SIGCHI and I'm so grateful for all the people I've worked with. The breadth of my perspective however tells me that Aaron and Margaret are the correct choices for this election, and to face our upcoming challenges.
