Highlights
One of my favorite things is teaching students about VC. It reminds me that the kids are generally going to be alright. They are so bright, curious, and actually pretty dang sophisticated. I was always a back row hiding in the crowd student, to worried what others would think if I asked a dumb question. These students sit up front and engage so well, I'm envious they learned how important this is so early in life. And the undergrad students are almost always asking far better questions than even the masters and PhD students!
Last night I shared the Ensemble VC thesis with Stanford students in Phil Wickham's class. Phil is a legend in VC and one of my favorite people so I'm so proud he invited me to share our perspective.
And we covered my favorite topic to talk about: Everything that's broken about VC! Traditional VC isn't scalable, at all. Most investors lack process for repeatable returns. Adverse selection is everywhere on deals. Loss ratios are way too high. And incentives for all actors are totally broken: the principal-agent problem is like turtles all the way down from LPs to VCs to VC firm employees to founders and to those founder's employees.
Seeing these student's wheels turn on how they would solve these problems led to a great discussion and always makes me feel even more excited about how we're approaching these problems with a product-centric approach at Ensemble.
For us, the end goal is to increase the slope of innovation for a better world for our kids. It's pretty techno-optimist but what can I say - that's what I think VC done well can do for our kids. And if VC firms are backing the wrong companies that fail as often as they do then that slows our progress.
So we think a lot of these problems are improved by leveraging data to identify the top teams, and building a process around meeting these teams - then leveraging our software to scalably to help these startups find customers and earn access. It is at least a start in the right direction.
But I must admit - I still have no idea how to solve the issues with alignment and incentives between LPs and VCs. It feels like both speak a completely different language and have very different motivations. That's the next problem we need to figure out!
