A new report this weekend from the South China Morning Post SCMP revealed a significant financial loss suffered by a multinational company's Hong Kong office, amounting to HK$200 million (the equivalent of $25.6 million in USD) due to a sophisticated scam involving deepfake technology. The scam featured a digitally recreated version of the company's chief financial officer, along with other employees, who appeared in a video conference call instructing an employee to transfer funds.
It’s an unprecedented theft, in terms of both the large sum stolen and the use of deepfake technology to simulate a multi-person video conference where all participants (except the victim) were fabricated images of real individuals.
The high-tech theft underscores the growing concern over new uses of AI technology, which has been spotlighted recently due to incidents like the spread of fake images of pop superstar Taylor Swift. Over the past year, scammers have been using audio deepfake technology to scam people out of money by impersonating loved ones in trouble.

On Monday, OpenAI announced a significant update to ChatGPT that enables its GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 AI models to analyze images and react to them as part of a text conversation.
Additionally, the ChatGPT mobile app will add speech synthesis options that, when paired with its existing speech recognition features, will enable fully verbal conversations with the AI assistant.
In its promotional blog post, the company claims the feature can be used for a variety of everyday applications: from figuring out what's for dinner by taking pictures of the fridge and pantry, to troubleshooting why your grill won’t start. It also says that users can use their device's touch screen to circle parts of the image that they would like ChatGPT to concentrate on.
OpenAI is billing these new features as giving ChatGPT the ability to "see, hear, and speak." Understandably, not everyone is happy about the anthropomorphism and potential hype language involved.
