Six years after acquiring Beire via our #searchfund, Ivona and I invited the founders Hellen and Petr back to help us celebrate the company's 30th anniversary.

We pitched our search fund, Continuum, with the tagline "we buy firms to continue legacies," and this was an important milestone in that quest. It was truly a special moment for us.

But it quickly became more than that.

Enough time has passed such that all reps and warranties, outstanding seller notes, COVID concerns and concrete business implications have passed.

This opened up conversations that really weren't possible before, and seller reflections on growing, managing, and selling the business that hadn't previously been formed.

Here are some of the generational lessons I took away from our conversations with the founders six years on, punctuated with the occasional sip of pivo mid-sentence:

  1. Selling a company right, and empowering the next generation to succeed takes a level of intellect, character, and humility that is rare among business owners. We were lucky to come across it, and the business is better for it.

  2. Company roots from founders are real. Business need to innovate and adopt technology, but there are so many lessons and mindsets that endure business generations (e.g. enforce strict payment terms, service on-the-spot delights, use cars as an analogy for client budgets/needs, cultivate overhead frugality, only client happiness drives CLV, etc.)

  3. Courage is critical in HR. Whether its pushing high potential colleagues to new heights, giving a younger/less experienced/industry-outsider a chance, delivering frank feedback, or quickly intervening in culturally poisonous behavior, this is increasing the frontier for generating better returns.

  4. If you negotiate honestly and in good faith, business relationships can endure even the most brutal of transactions. Very difficult discussions about seller note requirements, earnout provisions, reps and warranties, and later about restructuring during the COVID years, frayed nerves to say the least - but delivered an outcome that worked.

I can only hope that 30 years on, Ivona and I are able to attend a similar kind of affair - and wax poetic as the next generation builds on our tenure.
