The Next Big Thing in A.I. will be Agents (that's a common prediction), but Agents will dramatically accelerate A.I. development.

For this reason... Many of the A.I. research teams across various organizations (and probably a few secret government A.I. labs in China, Russia, the US, etc) are racing as fast as they can toward Agents, AI systems that can autonomously get work down... specifically Agents that can do A.I. Research work. There are maybe a few thousand A.I. researchers on the globe. What happens when you can spin up a million virtual ones?

I'll wait.....

Right? Yes, very scary.

Progress goes from exponential to step function rocket take-off.

Sometime in the coming years or max two decades, we'll get what most have been calling, "Super Intelligence," but that's a placeholder term. No one's really defining it.

Imagine being able to think for a hundred million years, and distill those thoughts into a moment.

Imagine being able to write for a hundred million years, and then return the best of what was written to the present.

Imagine being able to code for a hundred million years, and then ship the code to today.

Imagine the same for design, video editing,... theoretical physics.

The, "Thinking Machine" we have been building will be capable of doing this kind of work in seconds and minutes, not eons. The physics example brings up an interesting point, however, the work of thinking is not the whole of what we do. In science we have to think and run experiments. In technology we have to write software, but oftentimes build hardware too.

The physical work will accelerate with robotics and such, likely not to the same speed as the thinking work.

So... what happens then?

Remote Workers To Be Replaced By AI!

My favorite prediction from Leopold Aschenbrenner's recent essays is that AI agents will be drop in replacements for coworkers, so any job that can be done remotely, AI will be able to do.

Today, ChatGPT has a browser and image generator and a python sandbox.... Why not a company computer, email address, calendar, slack, github access, etc?

2.5 years until this happens... What do you think?
