When you join Google, you’re indoctrinated from day 1 that there is one thing that sets this company apart from others. It’s not the lavish perks, or the whacky offices or a particular technology - it’s the people. The people you see in the office, the people you take trips with, the people who leave you a different person - a better person - than you were before you met them.
I’m not naive enough to believe that this company - or any company - exists in an altruistic vacuum. But I do believe that the people within these walls are some of the brightest, most impactful people I’m ever going to meet in my life. I know that their stories are unique and beautiful and often left me questioning how I got lucky enough to enter their orbit. I know that to the extent a company can have a soul, these people are that, and it is now wounded. It remains unclear when, or if, that will ever heal itself.
For those of us who remain, we’re left with a growing list of questions that won’t receive answers, and an unshakable feeling that a grand illusion has been shattered. It’s been gut-wrenching to hop from meeting to meeting this week, hearing the names of impacted colleagues escape through the tears of their teammates and friends. It’s just as painful to know that colleagues outside the US are showing up to work under a guillotine for the next few weeks. They’ve experienced the loss of close friends and teammates in the U.S., and are expected to deliver high-level work everyday with no guarantee that that work will spare them the same fate. What inhumanity.
When we went to orientation, we were asked to believe that the people next to us were what made this place truly special. And we did believe it, because every day we had more and more evidence that it was true. But at some point, those same people who originally asked us to believe it decided that they no longer did. When they made that decision, they charted a new course for this company, one fueled by ambivalence and distrust. We’ll see what the results of that are - maybe there is enough of a moat that it won’t matter - but right now it feels like it matters a lot.
Perhaps the hedge fund managers calling for these changes can convince themselves that this is a step in the right direction. The balance sheet has been changed and the numbers have moved, but I can safely say that those things do not come up at the orientations where we learn about what makes this company go. For everyone on the ground, doing the actual work, we know what that is and we know that it’ll be harder to accomplish it without the people we lost.
Anyway, I suppose our losses are some other company’s gains. To be clear, these aren't people who had poor performance reviews, these are people who did truly great work for many years and were rewarded by being locked out of their laptops in the middle of the night.
