On my mind recently: 80% of branded efforts on TikTok should go towards partnerships. Let's forget about the brand feed.

I've been in several meetings lately to discuss what social content will look like in 2024. If the choice were up to me, I'd focus the majority of time and budget on building relationships with creators on the platform, seeding our products to as many new people as possible, and responding to every single comment or post. Posting every day? Not worth our time.

What does this mean? That your TikTok strategy should be championed by a dedicated relationship builder, and if you don't have one already, 2024 is the time to bring one on.

I say this as someone who (not to brag, just sharing my credentials!) launched one of Sephora's top skincare brands on TikTok and supported best-selling products through virality on the platform, where they remain today. While we were posting daily on the brand page, our viral moment was created by a creator our influencer/PR team had spent very literally years building a close, mutually beneficial and personal relationship with.

I also say this as an avid TikTok user myself! I rarely see brand posts in my feed, if ever. However, what did catch my eye was a recent activation where Banana Republic tapped an interior creator, Marco Zamora, to install one of his original creations in their store.

I think this was a perfect example of how to succeed on a platform that's built for individuals and where everyone is a creator: support someone with a unique vision, a distinct POV, and bring them into your world.

Thoughts? How often do you think brands should be posting their own content? Do you ever see organic content from brands in your fyp?

Last week I had the pleasure of guest lecturing at my alma mater Design & Merchandising at Drexel University to students in one of my favorite courses as an undergrad, the D&M Magazine. Over 2 terms, students assume editorial and creative roles to make their own an annual publication. The project has moved to a digital platform where students are now making their own social content – and that's where I came in!

Here's some of the great questions I received: ❓What's the importance of planning for creative? 👍 I said it's everything! When it comes to creative deliverables, a clear brief, approved shot lists and storyboards are essential for a project to go smoothly.

❓Was it challenging to transition to the beauty industry from fashion? 👍 In my case I had a body of personal work that reflected my take on beauty content. Other than that, I think foundational learnings apply across industries.

❓What's the best way to build a portfolio for a career in social content? 👍 In my opinion, your personal social accounts should be a reflection of the work you're doing! Make sure it highlights your unique talents, quality of work and point of view, too.

Thank you to the D&M team for having me back and letting me share a little bit of what I learned after almost 10 years in the creative and social space!

Sincerely, your D&M Magazine '14 Editor-in-Chief 👏
