(Sorry, Hitchhiker’s Guide is my all-time favourite book!)
As an #SEO, I know I feel anxious when a #GoogleCoreUpdate is rolling out. However, it’s important to remember that these updates are a regular part of Google’s efforts to improve search quality and user experience, and not a judgement on your abilities as an SEO. Instead of stressing, focus on what you can control:
- 𝗕𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁: Core updates take time to fully roll out. Don’t rush to make drastic changes based on initial fluctuations. Wait until the dust settles to analyse the impact.
- 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮: Once the update is complete, use all the new data at your disposal to understand how your sites were affected. Look for patterns and trends and don’t make knee-jerk reactions based on one factor alone.
- 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂: Take breaks, connect with friends and colleagues - especially if, like me, you work remotely - and remind yourself that SEO is a long-term game. You’ve successfully navigated Google updates before, and you will again.
Stay calm, stay focused, and keep learning. And 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰!

I'm seeing a lot of #SEO posts at the moment sharing graphs like the below from one of our sites, demonstrating some form of recovery due to the August #GoogleCoreUpdate. But be wary...
With any Google core update, rankings will be up and down like a toddler on Haribos. And this update is paired with an 'ongoing issue with ranking', adding more uncertainty to the mix.
But instead of frantically refreshing the analytics, making drastic strategy changes or breaking out the party balloons, I'm telling my team to stay focused on the plan.
If rankings are dipping it can seem like the end of the world, but there no need to panic - fluctuations are part of the process. Things might look chaotic now, but once everything settles, the site could be in an even better spot. It's important to resist the urge to overhaul your entire strategy based on a temporary dip.
On the flip side, when we’re seeing rankings climb that doesn’t mean we're putting our feet up and watching Realtime overview on the big screen, munching popcorn. This is the perfect time for us to double-down on what’s working: focus on keeping the content fresh and laser-targeted on the searcher's intent, and fixing any #technicalSEO issues.
We're due for a rocky ride over the next few weeks but it's crucial to stay the course, keep optimizing, find new avenues to explore, and remember that long-term success is all about consistency.
