We’re seeing a major shift in the focus of technology companies. The web and digital world isn’t our only data source anymore. Now, our physical world—every interaction and activity we engage in throughout the day—is becoming the new frontier for collecting training data. Devices like Pin, Meta AI glasses, Rewind, the Limitless AI pendant, and GPT-4o are leading this change by capturing real-world data and offering incredible context. This is a major reason OpenAI have opened this model up to everyone for free. The training data is incredibly valuable.
The internet is still a major focus for search, but now, the simultaneous indexing of our physical spaces, interactions, emotions, experiences marks a monumental shift with vast implications and benefits. I’ve used Rewind, the Limitless AI pendant, and Meta AI glasses myself, and I’ve seen the potential of this technology firsthand. These devices are making AI interactions more intuitive and personalised by incorporating the context of our daily lives. If you have seen the movie Her you will understand where we are headed...much faster than we probably imagined.
However, this evolution comes with significant ethical and privacy challenges. Capturing and indexing every aspect of our lives raises serious questions about data ownership, security, and potential misuse. That level of context and intimicy of information being indexed and stored has far reaching implications that may not be fully understood as yet.
As we move into this new era, we need to embrace the possibilities while being mindful of the challenges. The lines between our digital and physical lives are blurring, and how we handle this transition will shape the future of society, but also how we bring technology closer into our everyday experiences.
The era of AI-enhanced living is here, and it’s up to us to shape it wisely.
