The notion of #technicaldebt and associated business vulnerability is largely misunderstood by corporate boards and business leaders, and consequently tend to overlook the impending business implications. As technology became a critical dependency across all aspects of the business, #techdebt has become a business liability, not unlike the financial debt that companies hold on their balance sheet. However, tech-debt often grows silently off-the-books as an intangible liability, and If not properly managed, the excessive "debt" would most likely have a negative impact on the growth and operational stability of the company. I've learned that most corporate boards and business leaders don't have a keen appreciation for the business risk associated with excessive tech-dept, and therefore lack the proper governance, controls, and measures needed to adequately prioritize annual investments or institutionalize the appropriate risk management disciplines. By educating the Board on the cost of NOT managing their tech-debt, we've been able to help companies incorporate the remediation as part of their strategic initiatives and institute the ongoing tech-debt management within their annual R&M initiatives.

Much like the cybersecurity breach at Target in 2013, I suspect this Southwest incident will help elevate the "tech-dept" imperative into the boardroom.
