Crystal Penalosa

Civic Technologist, Designer, and LGBTQ+ advocacy

Crystal Peñalosa is an artist and interdisciplinary designer based in New York, focusing on self-compassion practices, authenticity, and personal safety.

While at Stae, she served as the Community Engineer Lead, supporting city officials and the civic tech community in engaging with technology for data-driven decisions.

During her time at Stae, Crystal organized, spoke at, and mentored civic tech events aimed at problem-solving and exploring cities using open data.

In 2019, during Open Data Week in New York, she showcased an art installation representing a New York City bike lane, utilizing open data and social media-scraped data to depict challenges faced by cyclists.

As an artist, Crystal has performed both independently and collaboratively at various renowned venues in New York, Berlin, and Hamburg, including MoMA PS1 and Issue Project Room.

Currently collaborating with Generations Unlimited and Voluminous Arts, Crystal Peñalosa is deeply involved in the artistic and music scenes, leveraging her expertise to support creative ventures.

Crystal holds a Master's degree in Urban Planning from New York University and a B.A in Environmental Studies from San Francisco State University.
