State Historic Preservation Officer at Wisconsin Historical Society
Daina Penkiunas serves as Wisconsin's State Historic Preservation Officer at the Wisconsin Historical Society.13 She has held this position for over 20 years, having previously worked as the National Register Coordinator at the Wisconsin SHPO.2 Penkiunas has extensive experience in the field of historic preservation, including roles as an architectural historian for the Historical Society's Museum Archaeology Program, a private preservation consultant, a college lecturer, and in the Hawaii State Historic Preservation Office.2
Academically, Penkiunas holds a Master's and PhD in architectural history from the University of Virginia, as well as a Bachelor's degree in architectural history and preservation from the University of Maryland.2 She is known for giving presentations on architectural history3 and is actively involved in various aspects of historic preservation in Wisconsin.

Are you intersted in collections management and Great Lakes maritime heritage? We are recruiting for a NPS Maritime Heritage Grant funded position to be housed at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin SHPO is partnering with one of our artifact repository partners at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum on a project to catalog a collection of 10,000+ artifacts recovered from Lake Michigan shipwreck archaeological sites by a private citizen and now in the custody of the state. We are hiring a two-year position to be the liaison between the Wisconsin Maritime Museum where the artifacts are housed and the WI SHPO/Wisconsin Historical Society as the owner of the artifacts. The position will process and catalog the artifacts at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in coordination with WI SHPO and the Wisconsin Historical Society Collections division.
This project position is funded for 24 months and is expected to end in August 2026. The position posting closes on June 3, 2024.
