Highlights
Most founders have no idea what it really takes to be a home run investment.
I just listened to Jason Lemkin break down the numbers on the SaaStr pod, and it's wild 🤯
For a seed fund to be successful, it needs at least one “fund-returner” - a startup worth so much that one bet pays back the entire fund.
So let’s do some quick math for a $100M seed fund.
Say you invest at a $15M cap (pretty standard). You put in $2M and own 13%. By the time that startup becomes a unicorn, your stake dilutes down to roughly 5% - your equity is worth $50M! So to get a fund returner, you need at least a $2B exit!
More math, let's say you hit the jackpot in a fund and have three $1B exits and three other 100M+ exits. With your 5% ownership stake, you'll get around $400M. That's a 4x return
You’re still short. You need more, and you need bigger. If you’re tying up your LPs money for a decade, they expect a 4X return just to justify not parking it in the S&P 500.
Looking at public markets, Asana is worth $3B, Box $4B these are great companies. To reach these valuations, you need $100M+ in ARR growing at 30%+ YOY. There are only so many markets that can support companies that large.
That’s what founders need to figure out today. You need to convince investors there’s a legit shot at a $1B exit at minimum. Anything less, and for most larger funds you’re just not moving the needle.
Once again, The Forum Ventures Studio is launching more companies 🚀
We think revolutionizing legacy systems, and disrupting outdated infrastructures is one of the biggest opportunities in B2B SaaS and we're looking for founders with domain expertise to co-build with us.
Following up on our first blog we’ve identified another 4 areas we’re excited about:
Cobol Modernization: Financial infrastructure still heavily relies on Cobol, an outdated programming language from the 70s. Recent advances in generative AI offer a huge opportunity to help developers modernize and work more efficiently with Cobol.
Frivolous Lawsuit Detector: Large companies face thousands of lawsuits annually, many of which are frivolous. We’re looking to build a system that proactively detects meritless claims early, reducing the work for in-house legal teams.
Universal APIs: Inspired by Plaid’s success, we’re interested in developing universal APIs for property development, ag-tech, and supply chain sectors.
Grid Interconnection: Connecting new energy sources to the main grid saw an increase of 30% in delays in 2023 due to surging requests. We want to build vertical software to accelerate the process of getting new energy sources added to the grid.
As a Founder/CEO you'd be leading your own startup with support and an investment from Forum.
