Why do so many companies think raising money is the answer?

I am eager for Founders/CEOs to call me. I like talking to founders and often I can help them in a single call and I am happy to do it. One of my first rreal "screening" questions, after I understand some basics about the biz (who they sell what to) is usually, " what is your top priority". The answer tells me a lot.

The answer I get often is, "Raising money". I'll ask a few clarifying Q's, but for the vast majority I think it is the wrong answer. There are many reasons I think it is the wrong answer (topic for another post) but lets look at the success rate of people that self fund, then get friends and family, then Angel, VC (multiple rounds) and exit...

The odds are very much against this "Common Knowledge"

Let's break down 1,000 boot strapped startup that actually makes through the funding hurdles to an exit (All 1,000 companies begin by bootstrapping or using personal loans and credit.)

Friends & Family Funding: -Only 38% receive funding from family and friends. -380 out of 1,000 companies remain after this stage.

Angel Investment:

  • 0.91% of the original 1,000 companies secure angel investment.
  • 9.1 out of 1,000 companies remain after this stage.

Venture Capital (Multiple Rounds):

  • 0.05% of the original 1,000 companies secure venture capital funding.
  • 0.5 out of 1,000 companies remain after this stage.

Exit (Acquisition or IPO):

  • Of the companies that secure venture capital, only 25% have a successful exit.
  • 0.5 companies that reached this stage, 0.125 out of 1,000 (or about 1 in 8,000) exit successfully, either by acquisition or IPO.

Ext via Acquisition vs. IPO: < 1% of the venture-backed startups go public (IPO).

90%* of the successful exits are through acquisition.(*not sure why its not 99%?)

  • Given that 0.125 companies exit successfully, 0.1125 would be acquired, and 0.00125 might go public.

Summary for Every 1,000 Companies:

  • 1,000 start bootstrapping.
  • 380 receive friends and family funding.
  • 9.1 secure angel investment.
  • 0.5 secure venture capital.
  • 0.125 successfully exit (acquisition or IPO).
    • 0.1125 are acquired. -0.00125 go public.
