Thanks everybody for the birthday wishes!

In honor of your enthusiasm, here are some hilarious self-portraits I generated using Midjourney.

I give you "The Philosopher King of the Beer Garden - A Four Part Study".

We all have multiple idealized versions of ourselves in our minds, and we constantly compare ourselves to them.

We hold them in our hearts as templates for "who we should be".

When we're unable to become "who we should be", we tend to feel like "failures".

What exactly are we failing at, though?

Where did these idealized versions of ourselves even come from?

When you ask a young child what they want to be when they grow up, they might say something pretty entertaining like "I want to find bugs" or "is it possible to become a velociraptor" or "astronaut warrior".

A young child's vision for their idealized self might sound silly or unrealistic. In reality, they are just far less constrained by cultural expectations, the social need to fit into a hierarchy, the struggle to make a living, and peer pressure to maintain an identity which is acceptable or popular for the in-group.

As we "grow up", all these constraints shape and narrow our ideas of what we "should" be.

What if we took the pressure off?

Who would we decide to be if we were free from who we "should" be?

Do you find yourself apologizing to people a lot with things like "sorry for the delay getting back to you, I've just been super busy."?

If so, you might want to consider being more intentional about welcoming beauty into your life.

What does beauty have to do with being busy? How is "welcoming beauty" the solution to being spread too thin?

Well, "busy" is a mindset - a mindset rooted in a value system which puts "being occupied with my business" above all else.

It's ok to be busy. But being busy all the time is a statement about what you value.

When you're occupied with your own business above all else, chances are you might be:

  1. moving pretty fast
  2. focusing mostly on the future
  3. missing out on a lot of the richness that exists in the present moment

This is where "being intentional about welcoming beauty into your life" comes in.

Remember how I said "busy" is a mindset? Well, believe it or not, so is "beauty".

Beauty is a way of seeing the world. It is rooted in the belief that "there are some things worth pausing and paying attention to."

If you find yourself habitually busy, intentionally surrounding yourself with things worth pausing and paying attention to can be a way of bringing balance back into your life.

My day job is managing software companies that do millions in revenue per year. I could easily play the "always busy" game, and watch myself disappear into the blur.

Instead, I practice what I'm preaching here. For example, it's super easy for me to find beauty in (roughly in order):

  1. relationships (honesty, vulnerability, intimacy)
  2. books (the older, the better)
  3. food (high quality, presented gracefully)
  4. objects made by craftspeople (good cigars, fine spirits, precision metal tools)
  5. technology products (thoughtfully-designed)
  6. notes (hand-written)
  7. dogs (well-trained)
  8. rivers & lakes (cold & remote)
  9. birds of prey (eagles, hawks, falcons)

I welcome beauty into my life not because I'm trying to project some aesthetic, but because when I see and feel beauty, I can't help but to spend more time right here, right now, instead of being "busy" all the time.

And you don't have to be fancy like me. Beauty can be found in the smallest, most humble things.

Anything can be worth pausing and paying attention to.
