I'm long since out of recruiting, but knowing many of you here from my work in the field, I still get word about goings on in arenas I've previously been a professional part of.

Despite an increased level of professional portability having become more widespread and acceptable over the last decade in particular (at least, outside of tech, where high mobility has run rampant since time immemorial), there is a distinct difference between proactive professional promptitude and reactive reconfigurations of responsibilities.

Suffice to say two things that haven't changed since I left the industry:

  1. the value of multiple reference checks from prior employers, and
  2. standardized probationary periods written into the employee manual for all new hires.

If your would-be hire has a lot of 1 year or less stops on their professional journey, and no prior manager will vouch for them, there's very likely a less-than-savory reason for it. And if a new hire fails to live up to expectations within the first 3-6 months, letting them go is most likely the best thing you can do for your organization.

And now, back to making music. Hope you are all doing well.

After nearly a year of design, testing and touring with its working prototype, Reliq Instruments' new crowdfunded project for its analog/digital hybrid control surface finally launched on Indiegogo.

While it lacks the pad-level MPE implementation of Ableton's Push 3 controller (in fairness, Reliq says its surface has "MPE support"), the prototype unveiled at Superbooth has been creating a lot of buzz for some time, and probably boasts the most robust analog & digital i/o of any current control surface.

It'll be interesting to see where they go after the first production run - modular synths are enjoying a lot of support, and the Reliq could be shot across the bow to control surface manufacturers looking to capture that market.

And the market noticed - after a mere 5 hours into the crowdfunding campaign, Reliq blew through their initial funding goal by 750%.
