Highlights
I love seeing creative ways to solve a problem! I've spent the past 15+ years helping leaders create them and I never tire of finding them, even more soI LOVE IT when I find others creative solutions, executed in super simple ways.
Another love of mine is BBC 6 Music, although I don't get to listen to it very often in my house. This morning I managed to catch some of Lauren Laverne's show and the topic of Fish Migration came up (unexpected by it fits within that segment of the show) and this amazing little innovation came up that I had to share!
The Fish Doorbell! 😂 No joke, in Utrecht in the Netherlands they have installed a fish doorbell to help fish with their annual migration upstream. You can take a look here https://lnkd.in/exN5BvEq, and here too is a quick breakdown.
There's a clear problem; We have created barriers to the natural migratory paths of fish which risks them being unable to reach their spawning grounds, often because they become easy prey when waiting for locks to open and allow them to progress. EDITORS NOTE: Yes, the simple, brutal and obvious solution to this is to get rid of the locks that are blocking their path. The creative solution; A Fish door that lets fish into the locks so that they don't have to wait in vulnerable positions. The problem is that the door can't be open all the time so they have installed a live streaming webcam and doorbell, that allows anyone watching to ring when they see a fish and open the door.
Maybe one the could make the 2024 52 things list Tom Whitwell 🤔
Great final session at #ITIEU2024 hearing thoughts on Attracting and Empowering Tomorrows Insurance Workforce. Great insights from Parul Kaul-Green, CFA, Catrina Gemmerich and Alex Bond, especially in answering my question! 😁
All very aligned to our mission at Startup Sherpas;
- meet young people where they are by solving topics they care about
- celebrate the things that make the industry different
- focus on your culture
- be prepared to flex your ways of working
- don’t impose your lived experience on the next generation but understand what will help them perform their best
What landed consistently is that the industry needs a new approach to finding & engaging that next generation of talent!! Startup Sherpas!!
