Imagine a world without money. (At least as we know it) Can you? What questions, curiosities, and feelings come up as you try?

I’ve asked variations of this thought experiment in a few communities and conversations, which has revealed mixed responses in our capacities for financial imagination beyond the reality of our current systems.

The current world order of capitalism is so deeply entrenched in the fabric of our values and our economy, that it’s hard to consider what anything else could look like.

As a DeFi-curious person (short for decentralized finance), I’ve devoured emerging trends in blockchain, smart contracts, crypto, and DAOs. And so the new wave tells us that DeFi holds the answers. Is replacing the centralization of banks with the decentralization of blockchain really the answer?

What is so smart about a “smart contract” powered by an “if this, then that” statement; leaving no room for the vulnerability of the human experience? I’m no expert in this field and yet I can’t shake the feeling that adding layers and layers of “fintech” and creating a trustless system built on code to shift the centralization of power is only skirting around the root of the real crisis here.

It’s one of broken trust and a pandemic that exacerbated feelings of isolation, scarcity, and fear.

So I leave you with this new question… What if we valued the depth and vibrancy of our relationships with people and planet as the social currency that powers the core of our economy?

Something I've been working on is generously receiving the words of affirmation and admiration that come my way.

Gratitude is not a finite resource. If I fully allow myself to receive it from others, there's more than enough to go around for everyone.

When I receive praise, I notice myself awkwardly finding a way out of feeling seen by the other person or downplaying my accomplishments. A compliment like "you always have really great hair" can turn into, "it looks great on camera but it's greasy as ever!"

Receiving takes its worst form when I'm in a group. I'll shrink myself and deflect attention so we can promptly move on to others.

When I'm in the hot seat, I'll bring others into the spotlight with me so I'm not up alone. I'll respond to "you have a unique ability to do XYZ" with "but everyone knows how to do that" or "so and so is brilliant at this too!"

It's not that I don't think highly of myself. I've never been motivated to achieve simply for the sake of external rewards. Sure, external validation helps me know I'm on the right track, but pursuing things for intrinsic rewards and internal joy has always been enough for me.

When I don't fully receive the words of others I'm robbing myself from an opportunity for human connection and happiness.

It's as simple as removing "but" from my vocabulary of receiving and meaningfully saying "thanks" while basking in the warm glow of feeling seen for my brilliance.
