Highlights
Each April, #WorldIPDay is a chance to celebrate the inventors and inventions shaping our world for the better. This year, the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO is highlighting the crucial role #IP plays in advancing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs).
This year’s theme dovetails with Tencent’s mission to apply technology for good. Our “tech for good” philosophy helped spur our commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, our participation in the UN Global Compact, and our decision many years ago to place investments in intellectual property at the center our business.
As a global leader in the IP space, we’re particularly proud that our IP portfolio is driven in part by investments addressing the challenges at the heart of the SDGs — something that LexisNexis IP Solutions has recognized three years running in its Innovation Momentum: Global Top 100 report. Tencent’s SDG-aligned patents, for example, amount to nearly 25% of our total portfolio and cover innovations to improve healthcare, expand clean energy access for all, and make it easier for the blind and deaf communities to use smartphones. From Tencent's open patent licensing program that allows our haptic-based patents to be openly used for accessibility applications, to other similar initiatives, we join #WIPO and our global community in celebrating the important role IP plays in driving innovation where it matters the most.
I’m excited to share more about Tencent’s approach to IP and what the team is doing at the upcoming #INTA 2024 Annual Meeting next month — the largest IP event in the world. To those attending — I look forward to seeing you in Atlanta soon.
