When I was in the Army I applied for a PhD program. I wanted to write my dissertation on why wars end. My hypothesis was that wars end when one side quits, and what makes one side quit is exhaustion. Suffering through barbarism brings about exhaustion. I’m furthering the ideas that Ivan Arreguín-Toft wrote about and what Curtis LeMay put into practice. My conclusion was going to be, don’t go to war unless it is worth resorting to barbarism.
Of course, I never wrote or researched. My hypothesis and conclusion may have changed, but history has shown that barbarism has prevented and ended insurgencies. Most have never heard of the Werewolf insurgency in Germany following WWII. It never gained traction and is a footnote in history. My thesis is Germany was so exhausted after WWII, there was no will to continue with an insurgency.
In 1982 Syrian President Hafez al-Assad faced a Sunni uprising in Hama, Syria. He leveled the town to include demoing still-standing buildings with explosives and bulldozers. He never faced another rebellion during his reign.
Countries weren’t questioning barbarism when national existence was threatened. I’m fearful of what could spin out of Israel and Hamas. Barbarism and the deaths of several hundred thousand could be the future of Gaza if Israel feels its national existence is threatened. I have no idea if this happens let alone the second-order effects if this does happen, but I am fearful that this could happen, and I will 100% blame Hamas.
What I do think, minimizing the atrocities committed by Hamas and trying to find moral equivalency between Israel and Hamas makes this horrific scenario more likely. The sooner terror groups are rejected, the sooner there will be peace. And as many bigots and anti-Semites who now feel free to openly come out and want others to believe, Israel is not a terror group. The suffering of people in Gaza is because of Hamas, an organization that commits atrocities in hopes that the people suffering under them will suffer even more atrocities.
Is A Swarm Coming?
I, like many, have been constantly thinking of the atrocities committed and the abject cruelty of what happened in Israel this past week. I wonder if this attack will be like September 11th and change foreign policy for the next decade-plus or result in something much worse.
At first, I became angry towards the civilians in Gaza for not rising up against Hamas and being complicit in suffering under their regime. Then I remembered Chalmers Johnson’s thesis, tyranny doesn’t result in rebellion but results in societal collapse. This is what has happened in Gaza under Hamas, nKorea under the Kim family regime, and what Putin, Xi, and Kahmenei are trying to bring about in their countries. We really are looking at an Axis of Evil. Will Putin and Xi kill more people than Stalin and Mao?
We are fortunate to live in the United States. No other country can approach the strength of our Navy and Air Force. No other country can export power like the United States. However, there are missiles, cyberattacks, psychological operations/misinformation, and low-intensity attacks.
I just reread an article by Dr. John Arquilla, “The Coming Swarm” (https://lnkd.in/gUmPi9-v). Dr. Arquilla was a professor at Naval Postgraduate School while I attended. He had done research into swarm attacks like Mumbai in 2008 or France in 2015. Five two-man teams killed 166 people and wounded over 300 in Mumbai. Seven terrorists killed 130 people and wounded over 400 in France.
I have concerns that if conflict spreads from Israel, the most probable enemy action will be swarm attacks that our communities and local law enforcement will not be prepared for because this threat has not been considered.
A while back I read an article on the collapse of nKorea. The author ended with something like, “There are two ways we will find ourselves with the collapse of nKorea, unprepared or really unprepared.” Unfortunately, I feel the same if we ever have to respond to a swarm attack. We will either be unprepared or really unprepared.
I'm wrong all the time. Hopefully, I'm wrong about this, but the world feels increasingly uncertain.
