Highlights
Well. £1,500,000? We better get cracking.
I’m beyond excited for us to have this support in what we’re doing.
The budget will be nice, sure. But it’s not as nice as the conviction shown by those backing us.
And then there’s the timing—right when our strategy and product roadmap is coming into clearer focus than ever. Lovely.
I was going to put the link to the story in the comments because that’s what you’re supposed to do, apparently. I don’t think anybody really knows any more.
While this means a lot to our early customers and our whole business, here’s what we’ll be doing with the marketing slice.
We’ll be bringing our new perspective to market by sharing our frameworks and thinking. Exploring ways to connect the problems we know eCommerce teams are feeling with what we’re building.
We’ll be investing more in building personal connections and mobilising “our people”. Getting to know our audience and giving them something outside of what we’re selling.
We’ll be kicking off more growth experiments, while keeping tabs on how we want to market. That means considering our own customers’ intent rather than being cold SaaS sellers. Appropriateness, always.
It’s time to take things to the next level and build a proper marketing engine while we’re at it.
Comment “🥱” and maybe I’ll share along the way. You know, out of spite.
When I joined Made With Intent, I said I wanted to do Marketing with a capital m.
I even asked for 'Product' to be taken out of the job title.
Why? Well…selfishly, I wanted to keep moving from the engine towards the steering wheel. From copywriter to content marketer. From function lead to strategic leader.
It’s deeper than that though.
I’ve long thought it’s a marketer’s responsibility to not fall in love with the product their selling, but to fall in love with the problem they're solving.
I think that means doing two uncompromisable things:
👂 Spending as much time listening to your market as you do selling to them 🧭 Having a clear strategy before doing too much with the tools at your disposal
I wanted a chance to set this from scratch, and show others the way while I was at it.
Not that it’s all listening to customers, getting feedback from friendlies and planning.
Since I started we’ve also done a solid segmentation. Grown our LinkedIn. Spent thousands on a super deflating expo. Held dinners with brands and partners. Launched a podcast (I know, I know). Honed in our product offering. Put website foundations in place. Nailed down our initial positioning.
Something must have worked (not the expo that’s for sure) because I’m made up to be stepping up into the VP role.
The fact I’m trusted to take this genius idea to market is not lost on me.
The team are all so smart. Like sliced-bread smart. And they make me smarter every day. Liberty, David, Charley and the others I speak with most days. Rebecca, Tom, Mathew and frankly everyone else who is always there when I need a hand or a laugh.
What next? It’s all about scaling things, running experiments, feeling for product-market fit and finding our early growth motions.
There’s a lot I don’t know about what’s coming. All I do know is it’s going to be a ride. 🤘
