The future is already here — it's just ... in China.

Great report out today breaking down #Bytedance from Matthew Brennan and Rita L., teasing new book Attention Factory.

Sharing the those sections I find most interesting here. They explain how, whatever you think of the people and politics, Bytedance is a harbinger of our inevitable #future:

  1. When information overload reverses the existing dynamic of people-seeking-content to instead, content-seeking-people.

  2. When recommendation algorithms drive competitiveness and growth (not the short video format, which itself has been around since 2011).

  3. When eyeballs shift to these algorithm-powered content platforms ... and ad dollars follow, disrupting existing #Advertisingandmarketing players.

Trying to familiarize yourself with China's tech scene as a newcomer? Or have you already been following it for some time ... but looking for more signal amongst all the noise?

In either case, consider the new Tech Buzz China newsletter, Extra Buzz.

I just read the first issue. Helped me get my head around all the new features #WeChat has been releasing this month and why (to recapture user eyeballs; see graph). Longform #analysis goes deep for insights (why Mr "Always Beta" pictured below is so singular), while also connecting to the broader context (Bytedance, Kuaishou, even Slack). I'm already looking forward to the next issue!

Super affordable ($2/mo) and focused (10-min read every two weeks), seems like a strong resource for those doing business with, working for, investing in, or just curious about #china #tech.

If interested, here's a sign up link: https://lnkd.in/fRtyaKp There's a decent discount being offered for 2020; only $18.88 for the entire year! Sign up before Feb 1 to lock it in.

Happy Chinese New Year!
