Amid the Indonesian garbage crisis and burning landfills, ASEAN and Indonesia are committed to implement a holistic circular economy beyond waste management and recycling ♻

It started from an idea, that shaped into a pilot project. The pilot turned out to be the “ASEAN Circular Economy Forum 2023”, held for the very first time last week, aiming to accelerate ASEAN and ASEAN member states towards circularity. Thank you main organizers: Team Finland, ASEAN, Sitra, Greeneration Foundation, the EU and Indonesian government, among others. 🙌

💎ASEAN CE Forum 2023: Two days, 250+ attendees and a week full of discussions and meetings in Jakarta. I already witnessed many needed new initiatives take shape in the hallway discussions and I was stoked about the commitment and plans that ASEAN countries have, to change their trajectory towards a more circular and resource-wise future.  Will we see a snowball effect of change picking up in the next years, what do you think?

🌊 In my view there is more momentum now than ever before. Compared to some years back, there is now also a great amount of new financing for the transition and it is amazing to see that a lot is happening already. Very importantly, the average individual is more and more conscious of the current crisis and needed solutions. This is definitively needed to strikingly change things and it opens up huge opportunities for future proof solutions.     ༘˚⋆。°✩  Indigenous wisdom and restorative practices. Indonesia is a country of 17 000 islands and thousands of ethnic groups of which many are ancient safekeepers of mother nature. Did you know that globally 80% of the world’s biodiversity is located in Indigenous Peoples' land and guarded by Indigenous People? That is probably why we have that 80% left. If you allow a brutal simplification, one could say that once land and biodiversity is “transferred” (not going into this one) to the modern system, the natural resources and biodiversity is exploited and turned into economic value – at the cost of biodiversity. So the question is: for the new, circular future that we want to build, what can we learn from the indigenous? As one person said to me at the event: “for the future we need to create, we will need all the mystical and magical that exists”. ✨   In a perfect world, if you had the power and the resources, what would you do to accelerate a country like Indonesia – or your home country – to a circular, resource-wise, restorative future?   Thank you all who participated. I was lucky to lead the curation of this event and I am grateful to see some fruits of the gathering already take shape. 🙏     Janez Potocnik Harald Friedl World Circular Economy Forum WCEF Mika Sulkinoja anne vasara Harry Tan D.
