I FAILED MY KIDS.
I was stressed out and frustrated. It was a tough stretch of life during that time.
Heavy workload, health issues, financial strain, multiple obligations, lost sleep..
I gave less attention to my kids, was short-tempered, projected my negative energy on them.
It wasn’t fair to them. I went to my wife and kids, and owned it.
“I’m sorry for how I’ve been toward you. You deserve better from me. It’s nothing you did, and it’s not fair to take it out on you. I failed you here. I’m not perfect, but no excuses, I will make the adjustments and be better.”
My oldest child started crying.
I. FELT. HORRIBLE.
But she looked at me and said, “You thought you failed us?? NO. You’re the best dad we could ever ask for.”
THAT. WRECKED. ME.
Fatherhood is HARD. I give it all I got. It’s a tough juggling act, and by no means do I have it mastered. More times than not, I feel like I’m not doing a good enough job.
But I am beyond grateful for that moment with my daughter. Just incredible.
Work/career achievements can be rewarding, but won’t even come close to that.
Fathers, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s most important. Life is tough. But, our presence, and how we show up, matters.
Let’s remember to take care of ourselves as well. How can we give what we don’t have?
Be encouraged to keep sowing love and attention into your family. We’ll reap what we sow!
Happy Father’s Day.
P.S. She was born on Father’s Day.
