Team of Teams is a useful blueprint for how leaders can better manage complexity and be successful. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to update their mental model of what a management structure should look like.

-- Slide content: Daniel’s return to office Audiobook project tl;dr - One-sentence summaries and key takeaways for product, business, and management books

One sentence summary - Innovation in Management - Team of teams is all about creating dynamic organizations that are anti-fragile, able to adapt and quickly respond to complex situations by creating culture of information sharing and decentralized decision making.

Takeaway 01 - Complicated vs Complex systems - Complicated systems (think car engines) are predictable and can be optimized over time. Complex systems (think an economy) defy long-term prediction and can be disrupted in unpredictable ways. To be successful in complex systems requires different management approaches.

Takeaway 02 - Organizational shared consciousness & decentralized decision making - Teams working in complex systems need free information sharing (opposite of “Need to Know”) to break down silos and foster a shared consciousness of the problem. Teams should feel empowered to make quick decisions based on that understanding.

Takeaway 03 - A leader as a gardner and not a chess master - A chess master has the full view of the board and makes decisions by placing pieces on the board. In practice, this approach slows down and decreases the quality of decision making. A gardner creates an environment where teams can be successful in their ability to respond to dynamic situations.

Achieving ambitious goals can only happen with sustained effort. Atomic Habits has some helpful tactics and strategies for maintaining effort over time.

-- Slide content: Daniel’s return to office Audiobook project tl;dr - One-sentence summaries and key takeaways for product, business, and management books

One-sentence summary - Atomic Habits provides strategies and tactics to create better habits over time helping you achieve your life goals.

Takeaway 01 - Compounding results - Habits work like compound interest for self improvement. Small changes in the short term ultimately result in big improvements over time. See compound interest calculators. This applies equally to good or bad habits.

Takeaway 02 - Systems not goals - While it’s good to have goals, systems that help you progress towards goals are more important. Sytems (or mechanisms for my Amazonians) move you past good intentions and actually create long-lasting change and impact. assumptions.

Takeaway 03 - How to form a habit? - The four steps to set a habit are 1/ Make it Obvious, 2/ Make it attractive, 3/ Make it Easy, 4/ Make it satisfying. One helpful tactic is to identify gateway habit rituals. For example, if you want to run a marathon the habit is putting on your running shoes not (takes 2 min) not running for several miles (takes hours).
