Highlights
As a teenager, whenever my wife was feeling frustrated or upset about an injustice or setback at school, her dad Tony would always say to her "don't worry Emily, cream always rises to the top".
I've always thought what a lovely thing it was to say to your daughter...a complete and unequivocal vote of confidence in her ability to achieve and be successful in the long term.
I mean, I slightly wish it had been balanced out from time to time with a bit of 'you're not always perfect', but still...it's the sort of solid foundation I hope I'm giving to my own kids.
It also captures what I want to say to my FIREFISH team just before we head into the weekend. We're all a bit bruised, battered - and knackered! - as a result of how hard work it feels in the world of market research at the moment. The industry feels like it values us just that little bit less than it used to, and that can start to eat away at your self confidence and belief that you're on the right track.
But fear not, everyone. Every conversation I've had with our team this week has been genuinely inspiring...people full of ideas, of insight, of smart and new ways of doing things, of unexpected energy that seems to have been magicked up from nowhere. It's been a week that's reminded me I'm working with the absolute crème de la crème of the industry - be that researchers, cultural strategists, project managers or beyond. You really are an amazing bunch of people.
So if any of you are feeling uncertain, or low in confidence, or just need reassurance that all this hard work will pay off in the end...just remember that cream will always rise to the top. Tony always said it would, and he was right about pretty much everything.
Have a lovely weekend peeps! And get some rest!!

We agree with The Coca-Cola Company
Not just because I drink over 10 cans of Coke Zero a week (it is literally the greatest drink ever invented, don’t @ me), but because they reckon #AI alone isn’t enough. And nor do FIREFISH.
Our QualifyAI tool is not a “lowest-common-denominator-aggregated-data-scraping-then-robots-write-a-really-generic-summary” AI thing. It’s a “real-humans-answer-real-questions-and-real-humans-conduct-real-analysis” AI thing. The AI does the thing humans can’t do - interview loads of people in loads of countries in a matter of hours and provide a thought-starter summary of the outputs. Humans do the rest - including looking through the verbatim responses for the nuance, tone of voice, outlier responses etc that the AI invariably misses, and producing a considered deliverable that answers our client’s question. All of this can happen in a couple of days.
We don’t and never would claim it’s as good as or better than classical human qual - if you have the time and budget to do things properly, you should! Ideally with us 😃
But if you need to get qualitative input into some #comms or #innovation ideas in impossible time scales and with very limited budget - AND want a decent quality answer - our combination of human + AI does that extremely well.
Our clients agree. QualifyAI has now been adopted by some of our biggest clients as their go-to tool for super quick turn, simple qualitative work, with many now coming back to us on an almost weekly basis with new projects.
If you’d like to learn more and join the human-led AI revolution, get in touch.
(And thanks to Paul Griffiths for flagging the coca-cola article in his post!)
