Highlights
Hey Bay Area Folks, an emerging food brand is planning a few activations to build buzz for an upcoming launch. They'd love to host pop-up events at HQ cafeterias, coworking spaces, universities, or other unique locations in the Bay Area. Who can help connect them to the right folks?
I just wrapped up a fantastic experience at the Sorenson Impact Summit in Deer Valley, UT! The summit's strong focus on aligning strategy, policy, and partners with values resonated deeply with me as an emerging manager. The discussions about inclusive investing particularly stuck out. I'll be keeping my eye on Redemption Bank and Amalgamated Bank, which are proving that capitalism can work with a conscience.
Unsurprisingly, I noticed the power of social capital as a standout theme. Hearing speakers repeatedly point out how relationships of 10+ years were an impetus for their role at the event really stood out. It reminds me why we need to address financial capital gaps for entrepreneurs and those of social and inspirational capital.
Key Takeaways:
Impact Can Be Profitable: Only a fraction of invested assets are impact-oriented, but it doesn't have to mean sacrificing returns. Many mainstream investors are finding success with an impact lens.
Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Action: Rodrigo J Prudencio & Propeller highlighted the potential of ocean-based solutions to rapidly reduce emissions.
Policy Matters: The CHIPS Act, Inflation Reduction Act, and Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal are shaping the future of innovation, and organizations like the US Impact Investing Alliance are playing a crucial role. Leaders like the Blue Haven Initiative are helping ensure we have an informed civil society and actively advocating for investment policies that create a better future for all.
The Power of Peers: Connecting and learning from other General Partners at the event was invaluable. Sharing experiences and best practices with like-minded individuals is essential for navigating the ever-evolving VC landscape. What a privilege to stand alongside Shayna Harris, Himalaya Rao-Potlapally, Courtney Leimkuhler, Jenny Barba, Vikas Raj, Ana Maria Aristizabal,Maya Horgan Famodu, and so many others.
The event's setting, surrounded by nature, fostered connections through hikes, walks, and insightful talks. Moving beyond business talk and getting to know such an incredible community was a delight. Huge thanks to the Sorenson team for creating such a meaningful experience!
