Highlights
GenAI and hip hop have one thing in common:
Remixing.
AI tools remix existing content, whether in text, images, code, or otherwise. A prompt produces an amalgamation of information that already exists, sometimes effectively and sometimes not.
Hip hop has used sampling and remixing to stitch together songs from the beginning. Some songs are bangers and live in my playlists forever and others I’m embarrassed to have heard for two and a half minutes.
Education is a music studio. Though there are some pockets of original creativity (which is necessary), we often use elements of other lesson plans, projects, professional development and we make it our own to serve our students, our schools.
Educators get students to find their own music and dance.
All of the U.S. Department of Education's recommendations for developers can be summarized by one key takeaway:
Create AI-enabled products that genuinely enhance teaching and learning, not just showcase AI capabilities.
Teaching and learning is about relationships. The best tools facilitate relationship building directly or indirectly, and it should be obvious how.
There's no tool, AI or otherwise, that replaces being seen, heard, and understood in the classroom.
There are many emerging ways to facilitate that, though, and schools will be discerning about which ones they choose.
