As I near the 4 month anniversary of unemployment, I wanted to reflect on how I've used this time to reinvent myself in the smallest ways and maybe someone would find this helpful (maybe not.)

Early on, I found it easy to wake up and feel lost. I spent hours jumping into the long queue of job applicants. I took that first, second, or third interview and waited for the positive news that never came. I tried to distract myself, but in the back of my mind there were hundred of negative thoughts that wanted to bog me down.

Right before the holidays, I took a break from job hunting and I felt it was important to have a rough plan for utilizing the 16 hours I got back.

A lot centers around activities that I never took seriously enough - exercise, reading, meditation - or was intimidated - learn an instrument, investing, start a small business.

Why do I explicitly allocate time? I know myself. If I didn't, then I wouldn't take it as seriously and I'll always find an excuse to forgive myself for skipping.

Is this the right approach for everyone? Maybe not, everyones situation is different, but it's helped me maintain a steady mindset while navigating a rough job market.

I hope you will find a way to reinvent yourself, even in the tiniest way.

I am taking a much-needed break from the job market. Upon reflection, I am thankful…

That I can start the day laughing and eating breakfast with the love of my life.

I can read a book while listening to music that makes me happy.

I can take the time to taste my lunch.

I can catch up with my friends and neighbors.

I can go for a long walk with my dog; she’s a great listener.

I can practice a new skill and learn a new language.

I can take my daily exercise seriously; only a little bit more.

I can sit and think about what I want to do for the next five to ten years.

While I know that none of these activities will pay the bills, I am thankful to be in a position to enjoy the little things in life that costs nothing.

I hope everyone, whether you are active in the job market or not, will give a moment back to yourself.

Happy Thanksgiving!
