One of my fellow co-founders at World Fund was recently asked, ‘isn’t it inappropriate that Daria works in climate tech, all while posting pictures from an aeroplane on Instagram’?

This question prompted me to write about this in my first column for STRIVE Magazine! I do think it’ll wind up quite a few people though.

I’ve written it to have a meaningful debate on some of the presumptions we in the climate community make, day in, day out. In my view, it’s okay to fly (so long as it’s not excessive - or easily done by train). It’s fine to live your life as you see fit.

Why? Because if we’re to solve the climate crisis - the most credible hope we have of doing so is if our response is technology-based and structural - a redesign of our entire economy.

We need technological solutions for 95.7% of the necessary carbon reductions. Just 4.3% can be achieved by changing human behaviour.

We are all - or have been - duped by the advertising executives who created the idea of individual responsibility when it comes to climate change. Ogilvy created this concept for bp in 2003. Their only goal - to evade responsibility for the climate crisis and pass it on to the citizens for several decades more, and with it, protect the profits that came about through inaction.

20 years later, individual action is still at the core of how we discuss environmentalism. We’re all still judging each other for perceived personal inaction on the climate crisis.

Different opinions are welcome, and all action on the climate crisis is encouraged. But, think twice before criticising those who are not able to make every meal vegan, or every journey by train.

Let us rather use our energy to make the oil and gas giants fulfil their responsibility, as it’s mainly them who created the climate crisis. We also need to force our governments into more ambitious climate policy!

Thanks to STRIVE Magazine and Wedis Reincke for the opportunity to write this column - available on news-stands across Germany now. My next one will be out soon!
