Highlights
This past Saturday, Memphis’ Shelby Farms BMX Track was open for racing and practicing; I took some pictures, and am particularly happy with this one, snapped as a bike procession with the U.S. flag worked its way around the course, with The Star-Spangled Banner playing.

IT’S NOT EVERY DECADE you are offered the responsibility and privilege to speak at your parent’s funeral. Depending on circumstances, some children will say words at the graveside but not at the funeral/memorial/celebration of life service. My sister, Traci Newberry, and I, both spoke at our mother’s graveside service but not at her funeral, when she died suddenly in August 2002. Friends and family rallied around us to take up the slack. With my father, we had more time to process the transition.
LOSING a close family member or friend is said to be like an amputation. Reaching for that hand or shoulder to squeeze, but finding it no longer there. No more IM responses or funny memes from them. That empty place at the table at family gatherings...
MY FATHER, Dr. David A. Newberry, was aged 79 when he transitioned from this life July 28th, after a lengthy struggle with respiratory complications post-Covid-19. He was a person of high achievement who successfully raised a family and had a great marriage of 37 years, pastored three churches, pioneered numerous others, had thousands of speaking engagements where people reported transformation after interacting with him and his message of faith and hope in God. As experience seasoned him, he was considered a leader of leaders as he traveled across several continents, and was a guest speaker on televised shows that numbered from thousands into the millions of viewers at times he spoke. He was so talented, generous, and Dad I was proud to be family to.
