This NextBlock Post Map has been a source of fascination for us.

Personally, one of my greatest joys is witnessing the growth of this Post Map. It's incredible to reflect on how it has evolved since the day we launched the app, from those initial 10 community posts to now having tens of thousands of users consistently contributing to NextBlock. There's an undeniable sense of satisfaction in that journey.

I've consistently stressed two critical aspects of data to the NextBlock team:

  1. Data empowers us to make informed decisions. While it may not guarantee the right decision every time, it provides us with a deeper understanding of user behavior, rather than relying on assumptions and guesswork. This data-driven approach significantly enhances our decision-making process and increases the likelihood of success.

  2. It's important not to collect data blindly. Before requesting our developers to gather a specific dataset, we should consider its operational implications. What insights can this dataset offer us? How can we leverage it to make better decisions, either now or in the future? How can it align with our business objectives?

If you were to ask me about the current uses of the Post Map, they may evolve as our company progresses, but currently:

  1. It enables us to pinpoint posting hotspots, revealing where users are most active. Based on the color-coding, it's evident that Northeast Singapore is a thriving hotspot, while we need to put more effort into our outreach plans in Western Singapore.

  2. NextBlock hosts various Traveling and Photography Groups, encouraging users to post from locations worldwide during their travels. Monitoring these numbers closely allows us to identify countries beyond Singapore that pique NextBlock users' interest. This information can guide decisions such as the next country to expand into or which interest groups to promote and publicize on our app.

At the moment, our use of data is limited to post counts and tagged locations. However, in the future, we have plans to further enrich this feature. This may involve monitoring the content of posts, tracking keyword frequencies, and implementing NLP algorithms to gain deeper insights into our users' interests.

We're genuinely enthusiastic about this prospect! 😊

Had an insightful coffee discussion today with my mentor, and we both arrived at the same conclusion: Social networks are facing some serious challenges. Here are a few observations:

  1. The rise of fraudulent identities is concerning. It's astonishing how many seemingly charming and attractive people try to connect with you on Facebook and Instagram daily, often complimenting your adorable child.

  2. Even sponsored ads on social networks have become breeding grounds for scammers. Recently, some friends fell victim to a deceptive Facebook ad offering cheap Cameron Highlands white corn. Thailand is even considering legal action against Facebook due to the proliferation of scam ads (https://lnkd.in/gPmpviVH).

  3. Social network marketplaces are plagued by high fraud rates. In a recent straw poll in Thailand, we found that 7 out of 10 Facebook marketplace transactions resulted in A paying for an item and never receiving it. This has led consumers to prefer paying more for first-hand items on platforms like Lazada or Shopee, where they have recourse if issues arise.

Connecting the dots, the common denominator here is credibility and trust. It's clear that addressing these issues should be a collective effort if we want to restore trust in social networks.

When developing a social network or platform with User Generated Content, these fundamental aspects should be a top priority:

  1. User Verification and Authentication: Implement robust methods for verifying user identities to reduce the risk of fraudulent accounts. Utilize multi-factor authentication where possible.

  2. Content Moderation: Develop advanced content moderation systems that can identify and remove inappropriate or harmful content. Invest in both AI and human moderation to maintain a safe environment.

  3. Advertisement Integrity: Ensure that sponsored content and advertisements meet strict guidelines to prevent scams and misleading information. Regularly validate advertisers.

  4. Marketplace Security: If your platform includes a marketplace, institute buyer and seller protections, escrow services, and mechanisms to resolve disputes promptly.

By prioritizing these fundamentals, you can build a social network that fosters trust, safety, and a positive user experience, which are essential for long-term success in today's digital landscape.

Let's work together to ensure a safer and more trustworthy online environment for all. :)
