We used to celebrate multi-tasking...until we found out it was a myth. Neuroscience shows us our brains cannot undertake two deep conscious efforts at once. Sure, you might build a complex habit loop that gives a delusion of executing on multiple tasks at the same time, but it's not focus. Quite the opposite.

You may get better at the ability to switch focus better, but every extra thing you say yes to is diminishing your output, your expertise, and your impact. It's a one-way road to overwhelm and ineffective energetic output.

So when you're feeling a bit under pressure, try these things to assist in eliminating multi-tasking (which doesn't work) and bringing focus (which does work)

  1. Change your physical environment - you've likely created a noisy and complex space, filled with interruptions. Instead of trying to think your way to focus, move your way into clear space and in turn, clear thinking.

  2. Forget the to-do-list - just pick three priorities. And y'know what's even better? Pick one. Choose a time period to sprint/focus on, and don't come up for air until those priorities are done. Don't negotiate with yourself. If you decide it's done, just get it done.

  3. Reward yourself - building new habits requires a trigger, behaviour and reward. After you've created space (trigger) and knocked over your priority (behaviour) then make sure you complete the loop (reward). Have a coffee. Take yourself for lunch. Go for a walk in the park. Find a way to reward your hyper-focused effort...and don't feel guilty!! You're much more likely to repeat the behaviour and build yourself a killer habit of deep focus/productivity.
