As we observe #BlackHistoryMonth, I want to introduce you to John Valentine Cline, the first African American to be employed by Chubb’s predecessor, Insurance Company of North America, in 1792. Mr. Cline’s story exemplifies one of the most important values that @Chubb employees live by – to deliver our best performance every day.

Mr. Cline worked as a porter for decades, navigating cities and the countryside to deliver vital messages, sometimes at great personal peril. His courageous efforts to relay information helped keep the Philadelphia-based company afloat during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. The leaders, customers and community members with whom he interacted recognized him for his exemplary service, and his legacy can be found in our #Chubb Archives.

In African American history, there are countless stories of people like Mr. Cline whose contributions are largely overlooked or forgotten by our broader society. As we celebrate this history this month and throughout the year, I urge all of us to learn about those many unsung heroes who have served as trailblazers and paved a path so those who followed could leap forward. #BHM #ShareBlackHistory #ChubbArchives
