It's been quite a journey since I last put pen to paper for this long-awaited piece. There was a moment last year when I had every intention of chronicling my experiences, but a complete focus on volunteering at Akshardham led me to put those plans on hold. However, that hiatus came to an end in January 2024 when I embarked on an exhilarating new chapter - joining an EdTech platform to spearhead core product lines for their burgeoning business unit.

This role represents a tremendous stride in my career, and it has stirred up nostalgic reminiscences of when I first stepped into the shoes of a pioneering product manager. The challenges, the triumphs, and the invaluable lessons learned during those formative experiences have left an indelible mark on my professional journey.

Embarking on the journey of becoming the inaugural product manager or joining an early product team is akin to embarking on an uncharted voyage – exhilarating, challenging, and rife with opportunities to contribute to something truly transformative. It's a role that not only tests one's adaptability but also offers the unparalleled chance to mold and influence the trajectory of a product from its nascent stages.

In this post, we'll explore the depths of a pioneering product manager, drawing insights from my journey. I’ve synthesized the most concrete and consistent pieces of advice below.

Be Humble. Understand the Culture. Understand the Market. Understand the Customers. Understand the Product. Use Your Fresh Perspective. Embrace Ambiguity. Learn & Iterate.

Please note that this is an extensive post. Feel free to concentrate on the sections that are most relevant to your interests.

First Round Capital's Fast Track: Leveling Up as a PM

Behind every successful company are leaders who have had brilliant mentors coach, open doors, and pave the way, often before anyone else believes. However, finding a good mentor and building an impactful relationship is difficult, especially in a fast-paced world. First Round Capital's hashtag #FastTrack program is designed to ease the mentorship process and methodically connect accomplished leaders looking to share their hard-won wisdom with the next generation of operators.

How it Works Fast Track is a 90-day mentorship experience that pairs hundreds of tech leaders with high-potential operators through a powerful matching process. Once matched, each pair receives playbooks and best practices to maximize their mentorship, including conversation guides and questions. The mentorship consists of six 1-on-1 sessions (at a minimum) to discuss the mentee’s professional goals, cultivate leadership skills, and provide advice for company challenges.

My Recent Fast Track Experience Late last year, I began the mentorship process with Michael T., who was the former Director of Product at Kandji, and current Head of Product Zluri. Michael took the time to understand my goals — finding my next role as a Senior or Principal PM, identifying strengths and gaps, developing growth areas, and providing guidance on becoming an entrepreneur. We mapped out short-term goals and long-term goals with defined timelines. Michael also advised on paths to companies that would help build domain expertise for future entrepreneurial goals.

We also delved into Ravi Mehta's "Product Manager Competencies" framework, which allowed me to self-assess on influence, strategy, execution, and customer insight. The framework allowed me to see my strengths and opportunities for target development. Michael provided nuanced guidance on areas like stakeholder management, surfacing my contributions through communication, articulating strategic impact, and managing effectively—all crucial for leadership roles.

We analyzed real-time scenarios, such as upcoming interviews and compensation negotiations. Michael shared invaluable resources and insights that helped me effectively represent my experience and negotiate with confidence.

Having Michael as a mentor through the Fast Track program was transformative and an incredibly valuable experience. His wisdom, personalized advice, and introduction to practical frameworks facilitated concrete progress toward my goals. This mentorship has provided a strong foundation that continues to this day with monthly conversations to share ideas and findings across tech & product. Those looking into mentorship opportunities should not look any further than First Round Capital's Fast Track initiative. I highly recommend it!
