My daughter goes back to school on Thursday.

So here’s a post about being a Dad:

By 18, my daughter and I will have spent 95% of our time together before I die.

It’s jarring, but data supports this claim!

But to even get to the point where I won’t see her much anymore…

We both need to stay healthy:

  • eat well
  • sleep well
  • strong community ties

Then, fingers crossed!

By 2036, I will only have 5% of the time left with my daughter.

For those who value time with family, this really puts into perspective how finite and precious time together becomes in adulthood!

This is why democratizing Flexible Working is mission-critical:

  • kids actually get raised by their parents again
  • more strong-loose ties are fostered and maintained within communities
  • more people than ever before pass the “rocking chair” test

All of this is a no-brainer, but let’s underpin it with some data:

  1. According to Gallup, “the optimal engagement boost occurs when employees spend 60% to 80% of their time–or three to four days in a five-day workweek–working off-site.”

  2. “The Integrated Benefits Institute found in an October 2022 survey that employees who work remotely or in a hybrid environment reported being more satisfied (20.7%) and more engaged (50.8%).”

  3. “Employees on remote and hybrid teams rate nearly every aspect of their employee experience higher than do those on in-person teams. They even report some surprising benefits, like feeling more effective, trusted, connected, and valued; a greater sense of belonging; and that their opinions matter more, versus those on in-person teams.” - Jennifer Dulski

When I sit with all of this, it makes me think:

The Future of Work ≠ The Future of Work

Flexible Working = The Future of Living

Covid sparked a revolution no one saw coming.

Though many “experts” say it was just an acceleration…

But pandemic-induced remote working wasn’t just an accelerator; it was an inflection point for society.

It was a shared experience. An event that lifted the veil. A before / after moment.

And the data just doesn’t lie:

Pre-pandemic, the percentage of full work-from-home days in the US hovered just above 5% (across ALL sectors, including frontline/essential roles).

At the peak, we were at about 60%…

And since January 2022, we have hovered between 30-35% of days on average.

-- And while remote is now “flat as a pancake,” it really isn’t…

It has exploded, experiencing 7x growth since the start of the pandemic.

But there’s something more notable than the meteoric rise in the number of days you, me and all of our friends worked away from the central office…

It’s the permanent change in employee sentiment that sticks out like a sore thumb.

People can’t un-know:

  • watching their kid’s first steps
  • being a caregiver for a loved one
  • being there for morning bus drop-off
  • having a midday chat (or necessary fight!) with their partner
  • taking that much-needed moment to collect one’s self privately between calls

And so much more…

So tomorrow, it doesn’t matter where we work from.

What matters is that millions and millions of people worldwide shared the same experience at the same time.

And there’s nothing that anyone with a vested interest in the status quo can do to take it away from us.

With me?

Happy Labour Day from the North Shore or PEI…you f-ing earned it 🤘

PS: Keep fighting for whatever brand of flexible work works for you cuz you deserve it ✊
