Dave Dorn served as the President and CEO of Special Olympics Minnesota (SOMN) for nearly 20 years, from 2005 until his retirement at the end of 2024. A native of the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Dave holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Gonzaga University and an MBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of St. Thomas. His leadership was marked by resilience, particularly during challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, which temporarily halted events but ultimately strengthened the organization.235
Dave’s commitment to inclusion was deeply personal, influenced by his family’s involvement with Special Olympics. He and his wife, Katie, raised seven children, including three adopted nieces and nephews, one of whom has an intellectual disability. This connection inspired Dave’s dedication to creating opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.45
Even after retiring, Dave plans to remain active in the movement as a volunteer and consultant for the 2026 USA Games. His legacy includes fostering a culture of inclusion and innovation that will impact athletes, families, and communities for generations.235
