Story Time! I'm seeing lots of Leaving Cert posts over the last week. I'm feeling nostalgic so I'll share my own! Lots of drama so buckle up. 🙂
I did my Leaving Cert back in 1992. I was in the Crescent College Comprehensive in Limerick. Half way through my exams, I got an unbearable headache that I couldn't shake. I had it for days. I couldn't sleep, couldn't study and certainly found sitting exams extremely challenging. After a few days of pain, I was brought into hospital in Limerick and they whooshed me down to Cork by ambulance for an MRI and other tests.
I can't remember the treatment, but I was admitted for a few days and my remaining exams went out the window. I returned to Limerick (cured) but I had missed several exams. I arranged to 'repeat' them at the end of the Summer, and got through them without further drama.
Until....
I got my results. My heart was set on a course called Computer Systems in the University of Limerick. I needed a certain number of points to qualify for the course. The first round of college placement offers came out, and I was 5 points short (the smallest possible increment under the required amount). Crap. I waited a few weeks for the second round of points, and the points requirement was the same. I was still short.
At that stage, I had resigned myself to repeating 6th year in secondary school.
I went back to the Crescent with a motley crew of other repeaters, and got back to the Leaving Cert grind.
Fast forward to a break between classes in my second week back. It was a Tuesday. My name was called over the school tannoy system, summoning me the headmaster's office. "Jesus, what now?"
It turned out that my mother had called the school (this was a long time before mobile phones) to say that I had got a third round offer for Computer Systems in the post. I had been so resigned to repeating the Leaving Cert that I never checked the third round points in the newspaper that weekend. They hadn't filled the course and the points requirement had dropped by 5.
I grabbed my stuff and cycled home as fast as my 18 year old legs could carry me. My mother was waiting at the front door for the biggest hug ever, and I started orientation week in the University of Limerick the very next morning.
How's that for a roller coaster?
I still have great friends that I meet up with regularly from that college course.
So I guess the moral of this (very long) story is that what's meant for you won't pass you by. 😉
