We're not going to rehash the nearly immediate social media frenzy surrounding Prime.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬.
Enter Refresco, one of the world's largest bottling copackers. If you're a major brand, with major demand, Refresco is on your list of potential partners.
To my understanding based on court filings and reports.
Prime wanted to both lock in production capacity and make special size/shaped bottles. A contract stipulated more than $55 Million in guarantees and included production capacity at one location with significant rework to lines and a special machine for the bottles.
When Primes demand stagnated... they decided to stop sending purchase orders, replying to emails. or show up to the machine run offs.
Not a great look.
𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬: 1️⃣ Forecasting is extremely hard, especially for a product that you expect to go viral. 2️⃣ Each additional customization creates a lot of work and added expense. 3️⃣ Contracts protect both sides. It's good to see major companies protect themselves.
