The economy in the first half of 2024 has been, in a word, unpredictable.
Jobs have been strong. 55% of consumers are still optimistic about their household finances, according to TransUnion's Q2 Consumer Pulse Survey.
Then we hear that Bank of America is reporting an 18% reduction in profits, largely due to credit card delinquencies (source below).
No one has a crystal ball, but if we follow trends, it’s clear that lenders must prepare for an increase in delinquencies and charge-offs.
There are a lot of things lenders can do upstream to prevent increased delinquency rates, like strengthening credit analysis, increasing monitoring and reporting, and engaging regularly with consumers.
But not even the strongest risk programs can’t totally prevent delinquencies and charge-offs. Lenders still need to focus on what happens after an account is already delinquent or charged-off.
It’s time for lenders to focus on servicing accounts beyond delinquency and charge-off.
Key areas of focus:
1️⃣ Communicating with consumers early, through their channel of choice, using messaging that resonates with them;
2️⃣ Understanding which consumers are likely to enroll with debt settlement companies, and developing a plan to work with them;
3️⃣ Making it easy for consumers to prioritize your account vs. other accounts that they owe

The inflationary pace is moderating, but consumers still list inflation as their number one concern when it comes to the economy.
Coupled with that according to PYMNTS, nearly half of consumers dealing with inflation also maintain revolving credit card balances.
In times of economic difficulty, especially when long-term inflation expectations are rising, it’s crucial for creditors & ARM organizations to communicate effectively with consumers so that their accounts become a priority.
Proactive outreach, clear explanations of options, and a willingness to work collaboratively with consumers can help alleviate their concerns and build trust in the collection process.
What are some ways to shift recovery strategies to work with consumers who are under pressure?
