I started a new position as Executive Director of Dryden Fiber in February and I'm excited to share the news! We're bringing broadband internet to the community.

I’m visiting Japan for the first time this month with my 12 year old daughter Natasha. We are on a packaged tour and have been exploring the arts, culture, architecture, history, food, language, and people of Japan. Outside of the set programming we’ve had time for our own exploration.

Here’s the second dispatch from the trip to LinkedIn fans, friends, followers, and connections.

Show your product, show it off, tell a story with visuals

As we toured Japan on foot, we were treated to many restaurant food displays in windows. These food displays are synthetic and hand-crafted for each restaurant. The goal is to show exactly what you will be getting when you order food. The nicer the restaurant, the nicer the food display.

We learned there are specialty stores selling these mock-ups. Can you imagine putting this on display in the morning for your family: This is what I’m making for dinner tonight. We even found a store in the Tokyo Skytree shopping center where you can make your own plastic food (kits available for assembly).

For the restaurants, they are focusing on the “show don’t tell” method of selling. In America, we rely on words of rare ingredients and unique cooking styles. Can you help me imagine what Iberico Pork “Abanico” with Malagueta and Black Bean Sofrito & Banh Mi Sauce will be like? The nicer the restaurant, the fewer words and images. We seemingly equate succinct menu descriptions for quality. The Denny’s and Chili’s and TGI Fridays of the world are fast casual with lots of photos of their dishes.

When I see these dishes, I can easily imagine the food in front of me. The easier it is to imagine the product, service, or experience, the greater the chance I’ll try it for the first time.

So, I’d ask you to think about your own product, service, or experience. How can you better show and not just tell the story of what you are trying to sell? Can you use photography or illustrations or video or even 3D representations to show off what you want your customers to experience? Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words.
