With all due respect, Amanda Pedersen has lost perspective of the patient. As a 60+ male who can benefit from LDT's (for example - Prostrate), I am disappointed by the lack of true investigation into this topic. Going deeper, (as an example) if you review the current state of Prostrate diagnosis today, the standard of care is PSA. I challenge anyone with integrity to factually state that PSA is accurate and reliable.
With LDT's being created that can provide someone like me a more accurate understanding of my potential prostrate cancer status, I am grateful that innovators are working on these types of solutions AND making them available via CLIA labs. My father was diagnosed with Prostrate cancer - due to PSA tests - and (my personal opinion) suffered needlessly on a premature basis due to this diagnosis. He later passed away due to bladder cancer (another topic altogether).
Ms. Pederson seems to suggest that the FDA will make access to LDT's available in a reasonable manner. However, history suggests that the FDA is not easy to work with - when it comes to newer technologies that they do not understand. In this case, I am suggesting that liquid biopsies are an answer to prayer for many potential cancer patients. As an example, see the success that Guardant Health has achieved in lung cancer.
In summary, please do not complicate my (as a patient) access to care. Please advocate for my ability to make my own choices. Otherwise, I may die before the FDA makes a "reasonable determination" on these types of new technologies.
With sincere respect and desire for patient advocacy..... Cheers - Dave Sheppard, CMAA
