Highlights
It’s so cool when virtual LinkedIn becomes in person LinkedIn…entrepreneur life doesn’t have to be isolated to the keyboard. 😎
Had a great time meeting up with Teddy Mitrosilis today after we discovered we live in the same general area.
Its amazing what you learn about a person and their work when you move from posts and messages to real-time conversations.
Who could you be intentional about going from virtual to in person with?🧐
It seems like there’s some confusion about what a coach actually does. Nobody ever defines what’s different but it pays to know what you’re signing up for.
Here’s the pro tip nobody is talking about.
The truth is that many of these roles include elements of the others. So it’s natural that there’s a lack of clarity.
👉 Your ROI depends entirely on being clear about what you’re trying to accomplish.
You can improve your ROI by establishing what your primary outcome (the goal) is
Here are some quick summaries should help:
👥 Coaching Client-directed conversations around their unique goals and challenges in overcoming personal or professional gaps (individually or in a group). Outputs are usually highly specific homework the client identifies or the coach suggests.
While a coaching engagement might be for a specific time period (e.g., 3-6 months), there is typically no pre-set timeframe for “completion.” Coaching focuses on an ongoing, progressive discovery process. The goal is to discover limitations and options for new actions.
🎓 Training A program with a set number of steps (“My simple 3 step process”) or a pre-defined timeframe (“In just 6 weeks”). Outputs are usually based on standard homework assignments that apply equally to any participant. A program may include “coaching” but it is usually limited to the specific framework or content.
The goal is education and skill acquisition.
🔎 Consulting Deep discovery and analysis. Outputs are usually customized findings and recommendations tailored to the client. Follow-up engagements may include additional analysis but detailed implementation support usually falls into the category of contracting.
The goal is diagnosis and solution design.
📝 Mentoring
Intensive expertise building and opportunity creation. Outputs are usually customized assignments designed to educate or provide situational experience. The mentor brings expert context to the experience in order to provide more depth in a shorter period of time. Mentors will also use their considerable influence to create opportunities which would be otherwise unavailable.
The goal is education and access to opportunities.
🛠️ Contracting
Doing the work. Outputs are specific deliverables a provider completes to fill a knowledge, expertise, or capacity gap within a client’s team. This work is often confused with “consulting” for reasons beyond this specific definition. The goal is delivery of a completed work product.
There’s value in every one of these.
Long ago, “caveat emptor” was a popular saying.
🧠 “Let the buyer beware” means it’s on us to know what we’re hiring someone to help us accomplish.
