Super Bowl, Feb 2023 – CHEQ tracks 159,000 visits from Twitter to its clients’ websites and calculates 2.81% of that traffic is fake. I.e. generated by bots Super Bowl, Feb 2024 – CHEQ tracks 144,000 visits from X to its clients’ websites and calculates 75.85% of that traffic is fake. This blows my mind. 75.85% of traffic from X was judged to be fake. To put this into context, CHEQ looked at other traffic for Jan 2024 (over 48m visits):
Instagram - 0.73% fake Facebook - 2.01% fake TikTok - 2.56% fake What happened to Twitter/X between Feb 203 and Feb 2024?
Mass layoffs at Twitter/X. Somewhere in the region of 6,000 employees were let go taking the Global workforce down to around 1,500. Within that number, around 80% of the engineers dedicated to trust and safety were released. Turns out some of those people were doing a very valuable job.
Musk famously had an expletive laded rant about advertisers but the vast majority of revenue comes from advertisers so the platform will probably die without them. The likes of Apple, Disney and IBM have all fled the platform and according to Media Matters, 50 of the top 100 advertisers from 2022 are no longer running ads on the platform. That’s huge.
Transparency, honesty, trust, and safety are minimum requirements for any media platform. If X want to get back in the game, they need to clean up their act.
