Generic picture of a pickle. A muffin. An avocado.

Was researching a place to get breakfast and stumbled upon this google maps profile where the owners had uploaded stock photos of specific foods/ingredients.

As you scroll through LinkedIn, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by all the brilliant, cutting edge, latest and greatest marketing and sales techniques. It can be overwhelming, FOMO inducing, inferiority-complex-building, and sometimes just plain exhausting.

I don’t know if the lesson here is that a lot of business owners don’t know how to effectively use modern marketing tools, or if that sometimes you don’t have to over think it. They have nearly 5 stars with 150 ratings after all.

Maybe the lesson is you don’t have to have the latest data pipeline and analytics technologies, complex targeting algorithms, brilliant brand positioning and marketing, and so on. Maybe sometimes just a stock photo of a pickle is enough.

Success is not truly measured in short increments, so it’s vital to remember that we are pursuing a story that unfolds over time.

So much of our world is optimized for short and near, it’s easy to get caught in the trap. Success isn’t hitting this quarter’s number, it’s building an enduring business/product/career with steadily compounding results.

I’ve been working in digital product development for 11 years now and consulting for over 20, and I’ve often seen this play out in investment decisions for technology products and innovation. Too narrow a focus on the near-term inevitably mortgages the long-term.

This is one of the things I love about Very Good Ventures and motivates me every day. Our team and our clients understand that the products we build will have a long and fruitful life. So we do the hard things today and invest in high leverage activities that will ensure accelerated growth can continue long after tomorrow.

ROI is measured over years, not months.
