David Ehrhardt

Senior Staff Member, Department of Plant Biology, Carnegie Institution for Science; Associate Professor by courtesy, Department of Biology, Stanford University

David Ehrhardt is a Staff Member at the Carnegie Institution for Science, based in Stanford, California. He has been in this role since July 2003.1 Ehrhardt is a plant biologist who specializes in cell biology and advanced imaging techniques. He holds a courtesy appointment as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Stanford University.12

Education and Career

Ehrhardt completed his ScB in Biology from Brown University (1980-1984) and his PhD in Biology from Stanford University (1986-1993).1 His academic journey began with an interest in plant population biology and evolution during his undergraduate studies.2

Research Focus

Ehrhardt's research primarily revolves around:

  1. Cytoskeletal organization and cell morphogenesis in higher plants
  2. Development of tools and methods for live cell imaging studies

His work has led to significant advances in plant cell biology, including:

  • Creation and screening of the first GFP-cDNA in higher plants
  • Discovery of interphase plant microtubule arrays as treadmilling polymers
  • Demonstration that the microtubule cytoskeleton guides cellulose synthase trafficking and cellulose deposition
  • Discovery of a mechanism for microtubule reorientation in response to light signaling2

Ehrhardt combines confocal microscopy with novel visualization methods to observe three-dimensional movement within live plant cells.3 His current focus is on understanding how the cortical microtubule cytoskeleton is organized and functions, and how it guides patterns of cell growth and division.3
